Recertification of the NL Product Label A for Greenwall Classic and Cassette noise barriers

Both the Greenwall Classic sound barrier and the Greenwall Cassette sound barrier were recently independently assessed by Stabilitas B.V. on behalf of The Greenlabel Institute. This assessment revealed that both types of barriers meet the criteria for the NL Product Label A. This is the highest class within the sustainability model used.

This assessment establishes the overall sustainability and ecological footprint of the screens for the next three years. The label provides clients—such as government agencies, developers, and private individuals—with insight into the products’ environmental performance throughout their entire life cycle: from raw materials to final disposal.

Rationale for the Assessment

The awarding of Product Label A is based on a number of specific product and supply chain characteristics that were assessed during the audit:

  • Biodiversity: The structure serves as a green space that contributes to local biodiversity. Each linear meter of wall provides at least four square meters of functional green space, offering nesting and sheltering opportunities for birds and insects.
  • Raw Materials and Origin: The product is made from renewable and natural materials such as lime-treated hemp and coconut fibers. The hemp is organically grown by Dun Agro Hemp Group in Oude-Pekela, which improves soil quality and sequesters CO₂ during growth.
  • Energy consumption in the supply chain: The production facility in Groningen uses local energy sources, including 3,500 m² of solar panels and an adjacent 50-megawatt solar farm. As a result, production is largely powered by green electricity.
  • Lifespan and Circularity: Under normal conditions, the screens have a lifespan of at least 25 years. The basic components used (steel, lime-treated hemp, and coconut fiber) are designed so that they can be easily disassembled at the end of their life cycle and are suitable for reuse. In addition, a return option is available.

Additional bonus point for assembly

In addition to the base score, a bonus point was awarded for reducing emissions during construction. Whenever possible, Greenwall uses an electric pile driver during on-site installation, thereby minimizing emissions and noise pollution at the project site as much as possible.

Future-Oriented Improvement

The current certificates are valid until mid-2029. Because sustainability standards in the market are constantly changing, Greenwall will continue to work step by step over the coming years to further optimize its operations, such as making transportation more sustainable and exploring shorter supply chains for the remaining components.
