New, taller noise barriers have been installed along a 1.4-kilometer stretch of Rotterdamseweg in Ridderkerk. This was necessary because the noise embankment had subsided and the old wooden barriers mounted on top of it needed to be replaced. An evergreen hedge and climbing plants conceal the structure. The barrier, installed by Greenwall B.V., reduces noise pollution in the residential neighborhoods of Drievliet and Het Zand. With this project, the municipality of Ridderkerk has succeeded in issuing the request for proposals and completing the noise barrier within one year.

On June 29, TV gardener and sustainability advocate Lodewijk Hoekstra handed over the Greenwall to Ridderkerk City Councilmember Peter Meij.

Rapid Completion of the
The Rotterdamseweg Ridderkerk Noise Barrier project was completed in two phases, centered on the intersection with Vlietlaan. The first section (982 meters) was constructed using cassettes ranging from 50 to 150 cm in height, which were installed between steel profiles. The second phase was completed in a short period of time by using prefabricated trapezoidal elements that were placed as ready-made sections on the existing embankment.
Vegetation was subsequently planted and trained to grow up the Greenwall. This quickly resulted in an evergreen hedge that camouflages the noise barrier. In various places, a flowering climbing plant was added to the (evergreen) vegetation.

Sustainable Sound Barrier Greenwall sound barriers are a Dutch product and 100 percent sustainable. The sound barrier sequesters CO2, produces oxygen, filters the air, and contributes to biodiversity. The barrier has earned the A-label from the NL Greenlabel Foundation, the organization that promotes the use of sustainable products in public spaces.
